A political firestorm is spreading across Capitol Hill after a wave of lawmakers and national security figures began openly questioning the health and mental fitness of former President Donald Trump. What began as quiet murmurs behind closed doors has now exploded into a public debate about whether the extraordinary powers of the Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution could ever be invoked.
The controversy intensified this week after several recent speeches raised alarm among critics. In multiple appearances, Trump appeared to struggle to complete sentences, repeated certain phrases, and delivered rambling comments that jumped between topics such as tariffs, job creation, and foreign policy. Clips circulating across social media and cable news quickly fueled speculation that something deeper might be happening behind the scenes.
One of the most vocal critics has been U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, who delivered a sharp rebuke during a Capitol Hill interview. Murphy argued that American troops should never be receiving military orders from what he described as “a senile old man who is losing his mind.” His remarks instantly ignited a fierce partisan battle, with supporters of Trump calling the comments outrageous while critics said they reflected growing concern within parts of Washington’s national security community.

Retired U.S. Army General Paul Eaton warned that the situation could become dangerous if the country enters a major war while questions remain about leadership stability. Eaton suggested that Trump’s public behavior could be consistent with cognitive decline and urged officials to carefully examine the implications.
The general also pointed to the enormous risks of a potential ground war with Iran. Unlike previous conflicts in the region, Iran possesses a far larger population, difficult terrain, and a complex network of regional alliances. Any decision to deploy American troops would carry massive geopolitical consequences.
Trump’s allies, however, have fiercely rejected the accusations. Supporters argue that critics are cherry-picking moments from long speeches and exaggerating them for political gain. They insist the former president remains sharp, energetic, and fully capable of making strategic decisions.
Inside Washington, the debate has quickly evolved into a broader struggle over credibility and power. Invoking the Twenty-fifth Amendment—originally designed to address presidential incapacity—would require extraordinary consensus among top officials and Congress.
